What is CFD trading?
A CFD (contract for difference) is a derivative contract used to speculate on changes in the Bitcoin price without buying or owning Bitcoin yourself.
The profit or loss is determined by the difference between the opening and closing price.
CFD trading often uses leverage, which amplifies both gains and losses. Most retail investors lose money trading CFDs.
The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has restricted leverage on CFD products and requires providers to show risk warnings precisely because most retail investors' CFD accounts have historically lost money.
CFD vs. owning Bitcoin directly
| CFD | Direct ownership | |
|---|---|---|
| Do you own Bitcoin? | No | Yes |
| Leverage possible | Yes | No (unless separately on credit) |
| Can it be used for payments? | No | Yes, if the recipient accepts it |
Bitcoin bought directly can be moved into your own custody, for example a cold wallet, which is not possible with a CFD position.
How does leverage work in CFD trading?
Leverage lets you open a larger position with less capital: for example, with 2:1 leverage a €500 stake corresponds to a €1,000 position.
In the EU, leverage on cryptocurrency CFDs for retail investors is limited to a maximum of 2:1 (ESMA).
In Finnish taxation, gains from CFD trading are capital income, but losses cannot be deducted at all (Finnish Tax Administration).
Leverage multiplies both potential gains and losses in the same proportion, and at worst you can quickly lose the whole amount you put in.
The higher the leverage, the smaller the price move needed to lose all the capital invested (margin call / position closed automatically).
ESMA has limited the maximum leverage offered to retail investors in cryptocurrency CFD trading precisely to contain the risks. Restrictions can be different for professional clients, but that requires a separate classification.
The costs of CFD trading
Besides the spread (the difference between buy and sell price), holding a CFD position typically involves overnight financing costs that accrue as long as the position stays open.
Over the long term these costs can eat a significant share of any profit, especially in positions held open for longer.
Bitcoin CFD trading: frequently asked questions
Is CFD trading legal in Finland?
Yes, but it is tightly regulated, and providers must give clear risk warnings in line with ESMA's requirements.
Is CFD trading suitable for beginners?
It is one of the riskiest ways to gain exposure to Bitcoin's price moves because of leverage, so it requires considerable market understanding.
Can you lose more than you invested in CFD trading?
Not as a retail client in the EU: ESMA's CFD restrictions require providers to give retail clients negative balance protection, so losses are limited to the funds in the CFD account. You can still lose the entire amount in the account, and clients classified as professional may not have this protection.
